On his first show since Paramount’s announcement, Colbert was comically defiant in his opening monologue on Monday night. “They made one mistake,” he said. “They left me alive.”
“I share your feelings,” Colbert said on Thursday night’s episode when the crowd booed the news. “It isn’t just the end of our show but the end of The Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”
The surprise cancellation of The Late Show is just the latest blow to the genre.

CBS parent Paramount insists that this week's decision to cancel Steven Colbert's “Late Show” was strictly financial, and had nothing to do with politics.
The late-night host had scoffed at a decision by CBS’s parent company to pay the U.S. president $16 million over a disputed interview.
