A gunman who held medical staff hostage before killing a police officer and wounding five others at a hospital in south-central Pennsylvania Saturday is believed to have visited the facility in the days leading up to the incident,

A 49-year-old gunman was shot and killed by police after they said he held multiple UPMC staff members hostage and shot multiple people.

(CNN) — A police officer was killed and five other people were wounded when a man took medical staff hostage and opened fire at a York, Pennsylvania, hospital on Saturday morning, officials said. The gunman, identified by authorities as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, 49, was also killed, authorities said.

Workers at a Pennsylvania hospital who were injured during a shooting that left the gunman and a police officer dead are reported in “medically stable” condition.

The suspect, Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, entered the hospital with handgun and zip ties Saturday morning and took several staff members hostage, state officials said.

A gunman, armed with a handgun and carrying zip ties, went inside UPMC's ICU, and took staffers hostage before he was ultimately killed by police in a shootout, the York County DA said.
