“Pride, from its origin, is not only a celebration, it’s also a protest,” Sharat Lin, a longtime activist from San Jose who was at the parade for Dance with Pride, told SFGATE. “Here in San Francisco, where almost everybody supports LGBTQ rights, it’s easy to forget that. But it wasn’t always that way. It was part of a struggle.”

San Francisco Pride Parade marched, danced and skipped down Market Street in an array of music, dancing, a sea of rainbows and costumes to celebrate the “Queer Joy is Resistance” theme of one of the largest LGBTQ celebrations in the country on Sunday.

The San Francisco Pride Parade and Pride Celebration will take place this weekend, but some road closures will begin on Thursday. Here's what to know.
