LONDON − The ship's captain arrested in connection with a crash into a U.S.-flagged tanker off the coast of England is a Russian national, the German company that owns the vessel said Wednesday.

British police arrested a man on Tuesday on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter after an unexplained collision at sea left a tanker carrying U.S. army jet fuel with a gaping hole in its side and a charred container ship adrift.

U.K. police say the Solong cargo ship's captain, identified by the vessel's owner as a Russian national, was detained on suspicion of negligent manslaughter.
