A powerful winter storm system could become a "bomb cyclone" over the Great Lakes and Northeast regions this week.
A bomb cyclone dumped snow on the Midwest and the Northeast over the weekend. Monday afternoon, more than 11 million people were under winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories — and more than 98 million were under high wind advisories from Indiana to Boston, according to the weather service.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory across southern Wisconsin lasting throughout the day Dec. 29.
On New Year's Day, the lake effect snow will continue off of lakes Erie and Ontario. That new snow could bring the total snowfall to 1 to 3 feet in places like Orchard Park in upstate New York.
