The Justice Department has filed a civil lawsuit against Walgreens, accusing the 124-year-old pharmacy chain of dispensing millions of unlawful prescriptions over a period of several years.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a civil complaint against Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) and its subsidiaries, alleging widespread violations of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and False Claims Act (FCA).

In it, the government accuses Walgreens of filling millions of unlawful prescriptions, including for excessive quantities of opioids, early refills of opioids and the so-called “holy trinity” of commonly abused drugs: an opioid, a benzodiazepine and a muscle relaxant.
