United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said on Friday that the carrier will begin canceling 35 flights a day – or about 10% – at its Newark hub starting over the weekend due to government equipment failures and air traffic control staffing issues.

It was a bad weekend for Newark Liberty fliers as staffing shortages, equipment issues, a runway paving project and thunderstorms all contributed to nearly 1,000 delayed departures and arrivals.

Passengers with flights to or from Newark Liberty International Airport encountered long delays and cancellations Saturday due to an air traffic controller shortage, a nationwide problem the Trump administration has pledged to fix.
