Those who want to tour places in and around San Francisco have the option of using self-driving cars from Waymo.

In November, Waymo expanded its service area to stretch across more than 260 square miles of the San Francisco Bay Area, and added freeway access for passengers. Riders can now hail a driverless ride to San Jose Mineta International Airport as well as San Francisco International Airport.

So far, Waymo is winning Super Bowl week. The Google sister company, which offers cab rides in autonomous cars, announced Monday that it had raised a $16 billion funding round at a $126 billion valuation.

Waymo has control over where its robotaxi fleet is stationed, allowing the company to respond to temporary high-demand events like the Super Bowl.

Roughly half of U.S. states now have their own rules for driverless cars, creating a patchwork of regulations. Lawmakers say that uneven oversight, combined with several high-profile incidents, underscores the need for uniform federal guardrails that don't stifle innovation yet ensure public safety.

Waymo announced Thursday that its robotaxi service is now available to and from San Francisco International Airport, ahead of upcoming major events in the Bay Area including the Super Bowl and World Cup.

‘We are eager to bring the future of mobility to this vibrant community,' said Waymo officials on Thursday.

Waymo has worked for years to gain access to SFO.

The San Francisco Standard notes that SFO is now the third airport in Waymo's repertoire. The San Francisco launch follows the company's service at Phoenix Sky Harbor and San Jose Mineta. As for the Bay Area, Waymo now serves more than 260 square miles in the region.
