DUBAI (Reuters) - Jordan and Syria agreed to form a joint security committee to secure their border and combat the smuggling of arms and drugs as well as cooperating to prevent the resurgence of Islamic State, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Tuesday.

The Islamic State militant group, which once imposed a reign of terror over millions of people in Syria and Iraq, captured Jordanian pilot Mouath al-Kasaesbeh in December 2014 and later published a video of him being burned alive in a cage.

Located in the Middle East, Jordan is close to several conflicts. With Syria to the North, Iraq to the East, Israel to the East and Saudi Arabia to the south, the region is active. However, Jordan is often a peaceful escape in the middle of noisy neighbors.

Shobaki also emphasised that Jordanian agricultural products and essential commodities can effectively and sustainably meet Syria’s market demands. Jordan is also looking to contribute to Syria’s energy sector by supplying electricity and helping to rehabilitate its damaged power grids.
