U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas, who died this month just weeks into first term in Congress, was scheduled to lie in state at Houston City Hall on Tuesday in the first of several public events honoring the former Democratic lawmaker and mayor.

Sylvester Turner became the 62nd mayor of Houston, leading the city from 2016 to 2024, before being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2024.

Turner's death came just months after he won Texas’ 18th Congressional District race. He served eight years as Houston's mayor after 27 years in the Texas House of Representatives.

Turner’s death comes two months into his first term representing Texas’ 18th Congressional District, the seat long occupied by former U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who also died in office last year amid a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Texas Rep. Jon Rosenthal (D-Houston) offered his condolences to Turner early Wednesday morning. "He was a dear friend and an incredible lifelong public servant who will be forever remembered for his service to our communities, our city, our state and our country. RIP Mr Mayor."
