A bomb cyclone is expected to bring more dangerous winds and heavy rain today in eastern New South Wales. Thousands have been left without power in the state. 60 passengers have been rescued in Lake Macquarie after a power line fell on top of a train.

Emergency crews are scrambling across the NSW south coast after towns were drenched by record-breaking rainfall, and about 40,000 homes and businesses across the state were left without power. Ulladulla was hit with 223mm of rain between 9am yesterday and 6am today local time,

The effect of a "bomb cyclone" around the New South Wales coastline is being felt north, in Queensland. Parts of the state experienced wind gusts averaging between 60 and 70 kilometres an hour overnight. Unlike in New South Wales, it is bringing cold but dry conditions to much of the state that could continue until Monday.
