Heavy winds that swept through Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Sunday night started “rapid fire spread” after a relatively slow day of growth, according to fire officials.

High winds last night caused a wildfire to continue to spread at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The park is about five hours west of Colorado Springs.

Five wildfires are burning on thousands of acres in western Colorado, including one that crossed into the state from Utah, fire officials said Sunday.

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - Evacuations have been issued, and road closures have been in place after a wildfire sparked in Mesa County. The wildfire, dubbed the Turner Gulch fire, was reported around 12:18 p.m. Thursday.

The fires varied in size but have already forced several evacuations and pre-evacuation notices, closed a national park, and the Deer Creek Fire near the Utah state line has already destroyed at least five buildings.
