Denmark's foreign minister said his country welcomed President Trump's comments that the people of Greenland had a right to self-determination but that he didn't believe that the territory's push to loosen ties with his country meant it wanted to become part of the U.

Denmark's foreign minister said on Wednesday that it was significant that U.S. President Donald Trump had recognised Greenland's right to self-determination while reiterating an interest in acquiring the island in his address to Congress.

Acknowledging the uncertainty sparked by Trump's statements, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed Denmark's position on Wednesday, emphasising that Greenland's future is solely for its p

"We are not for sale and cannot simply be taken. Our future will be decided by us in Greenland," Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede said.

During his first term, Mr. Trump floated the idea of the United States buying Greenland from Denmark, which essentially said no way. This time around, Mr. Trump has taken a harsher tone, saying that he wouldn’t rule out using force to take over the island.
