The Mavericks have agreed to a 2-year, $13 million contract with D'Angelo Russell in NBA free agency to serve as Kyrie Irving's backup.

Irving is going to opt out of his $43.9 million contract for next season and will re-sign with the Mavericks for three years, $119 million, reports Shams Charania of ESPN. The final year of the deal is a player option. It’s a contract very similar to the one he signed three years ago in Brooklyn.

It’s no surprise Powell intends to return to the franchise he joined in 2014, his rookie year. As a Mavericks fixture the last 11 years, he has witnessed the twilight of Dirk Nowitzki’s career and the dynamic 6 1/2 seasons of the Doncic era. Powell will potentially enter a new era in franchise history if Dallas drafts Flagg on Wednesday night.
