On this day, 103 years ago, on June 15, 1920, Pennsylvania’s first game lands, State Game Lands #25, was acquired in Elk County. Game Commissioner John Phillips, of Pittsburgh spearheaded the acquisition of the land with the board of Commissioners. The number 25 resulted from the game refuges numbering system that ran 1 through 24 at that time. A dedication ceremony was held on Aug. 1, 1948, on SGL 25 and the ceremony honored Phillip’s interest in conservation and efforts in making Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Game Commission never stops working for wildlife, even during the winter! Recently, habitat crews in the Southwest Region used skid loaders with special attachments to “mow” and remove trees from the forest’s midstory to allow sunlight to reach the forest floor and promote oak regeneration and young forest habitat conditions.
