During the opening ceremony of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, pigeons were released as part of a peace symbol, a tradition in Olympic ceremonies. Unfortunately, some of the pigeons landed on the Olympic cauldron and were caught in the flame when it was ignited. This incident caused a significant public reaction and criticism, prompting the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to end the practice of using live animals in subsequent ceremonies. | History In Pictures
